Damn! The Oxford History of Board Games isn’t currently available… 🙁

Actually, the second link for Oxford History… takes you to alibris.com, which lists one available at $395. As you’re on that side of the pond, I’m guessing you can get one for cheaper — probably something I should have mentioned.

I made about 48 students at Ball State University buy this book as the backbone of a class I taught to Honors students on boardgames. Normally the college textbook story is “bought it for $60 sold it for $5.” Talk about a reversal! I even have a spare copy, I think. As soon as I establish the truth of that, I will be selling one. I would also recommend Parlett’s Oxford History of Card Games as an excellent resource.

Excuse me, the actual title is “Oxford Guide to Card Games.” He also has a “Dictionary of Card Games.” The first is a history, the second an awesome set of card game rules with just a bit of theory.

Heh, you’ve got some lucky students out there now. I doubt you’d really get $400 for the Parlett book — as I said, I think the bookseller was just speculating, knowing it was rare and hoping that someone would be desperate enough to bite. However, I suspect you could get $75-100 for it, easily.

I’ll be adding his Guide to Card Games to my wish list… much more affordable.

I would also recommend Parlett’s Oxford History of Card Games as an excellent resource.
