This week, I go back to old card games, and cover Parker Brother’s Pit (currently published by Winning Moves), and its predecessor Gavitt’s Stock Exchange (currently published by Out of the Box).

Show notes:

  • Intro, revisits for last two podcasts, hello and many thanks
  • History and basic description of Gavitt’s Stock Exchange
  • History and basic description of Pit
  • Optional rules for both
  • Discussion of recent play
  • Analysis and review
  • Next week: My Diplomatic history or a possibly a two-player game

Final Thoughts:

I probably should have mentioned the silent rules, where you indicate your desired trade with your fingers, but like Tom Vasel I think this game should be loud and boisterous — otherwise, what’s the point? I’ve also included Patrick Korner’s review of Gavitt’s Stock Exchange in the links above, to give an alternate and more informed perspective.

Jim I think you’ve found your voice in these last 2 episodes. You sounded very comfortable and really into the games. Even thowing in some funny
comments here and there. Good stuff. And good reviews!

I bought my stepdad “The Pit” on a whim from Thoughthammer. As he is really into watching the stocks these days. And “Mad Money TV show”. But I only got the deck and not the bell. (I hadn’t realised there was a version sold with it). But now I know and will get one so we can really play the game proper.

As always, looking forward to more vintage goodness!

Thanks! Putting that one together was like pulling teeth, so I’m glad it turned out well.

Hope you guys have fun with Pit — you can get a bell at Office Depot; I’ll put a link in the main blog entry. Another game you might consider for your stepdad is Buy Low Sell High by Reiner Knizia and published by Uberplay. It’s a re-release of his game Palmyra. I haven’t played it yet myself, but I’ve heard good things about it.
